This amazing concept of driftwood sculpture is the brainchild of artist James Doran-Webb, whose work will evoke lots of thoughts in your mind when you see his great masterpieces, something so unconventional like driftwood appears to be so majestic. It takes the talent of an artist to carve out something wonderful from something which may appear ‘nothing’ to us.
The artist tried to capture natural motion so aptly, that you won’t be able to figure out these sculptures are just an end product of driftwood which appears so living to us. Perhaps to define it in one sentence- ‘It’s amazing and priceless”
Enough said, scroll down to explore some of the masterpieces of Doran-Webb.
This wonderful work of art comprised of driftwoods which is collected by Doran-Webb from beaches on the Philippine Island of Cebu.
And what you want to say after seeing the end product? Awesome isn’t it?
This British artist lives and works in Cebu and has his own studio. The main theme of his work is to capture natural motion of subjects as depicted in his various sculptures.
In words of Doran-Webb it is an outcome of sudden flash of ideas which helped him to come up with these innovative pieces of work. After the rough sketch, he along with his assistant created a frame using stainless steel. Then they put driftwood together with the aid of bolts or screws. Hats off to them I say!
Then another layer of small pieces of wood fixed to give the sculpture its last finishing touch. Any guesses for the time it takes to carve a sculpture? It’s some thousand odd hours!
Kudos to Mr. Webb!
Look this Wyvern sculpture which is created keeping in view the outdoor location and the list of similar sculpture is just endless…
Since 2000 he actually started his creation using driftwoods for making furniture’s which slowly transformed into elegant sculpture making.
