When your eyes glance at this, you may think you are looking at something out of a science fiction movie, it is like a giant meteorite has smashed through the Earth’s crust leaving an inferno in its aftermath. Or, we have been attacked by alien craft from another galaxy.
In actual fact though, this giant hole of flames is a crater that was made by Soviet geologists in 1971. They did not plan this though, they were in fact just drilling for natural gas but the ground beneath the rig collapsed.
What was left was this giant hole 70 meters across. The officials had to act on this as they were unsure what exactly was down there in terms of gases. So, they decided to burn the gases off fearing that some may be harmful.
They thought or rather hoped that the gases would simply burn off after a few days and everything would be fine.
They are still burning some 4 decades later!
